Janfa (feat. Mariam Koné)

Yemanjo

Wonderwheel Recordings

"Janfa", the final single from Yemanjo's full length "La Misma Fuente" album, is a satisfying detour into Dub/Reggae territory with a West African "desert blues" twist. The track is anchored by irresistible guitar and ngoni riffs and a spellbinding trumpet line; but the real star here is Mariam Koné (also featured on the first single from the album, entitled "Juru Fô") whose call and response vocals ring out with effortless authority in her native Bambara language. The title of the track translates as "Betrayal" and the lyrics are a stunning indictment of the invading forces that have subjugated and exploited Mali across generations: "Yes we are Mali. We no longer want slavery. The Arabs arrived first, then the westerners...the Malians have opened their eyes. Africans have woken up." "Janfa" offers a stark yet beautiful message and offers captivating melodies and rhythm to spare; it's also a perfect track to showcase the stylistic diversity of the "La Misma Fuente" album, due out May 10 from Wonderwheel Recordings.
