DADDY MOLETE

He may be little known right now, but Daddy Molete is a vocalist and performer who has already made a mark on the international map, a household name with the arrival of his eclectic and supremely catchy "Do Like I Do" album.

"Umdali" means 'creator', and the creators of 2000's deeply original Afro House track by the same name – Nutty Nys, DJ Mbuso and Daddy – not only landed up on essential SA compilations like "House of T-Bose", but also caught the attention and ear of folk like renowned Nottingham-based house producer Charles Webster (aka Presence and remixer of the likes of Justin Fly and Salif Keita).

Webster liked the tune so much, in fact, that he licensed it as the second offering for his Miso label. He also remixed it and gave it to the UK's Brooks and Germany's Vincenzo to do the same. Not a bad outcome for a song that, "We were just experimenting on" Daddy admits.

This is just one of the high points on an album that Thomas Ramatome Molete (aka Daddy) says is all about celebration: "gospel, love and fun". With consummate ease this Sebokeng (South Africa)-raised singer and producer (introduced to the craft, like so many greats, through the church) breezes his way through wonderfully diverse musical terrain. Gospel, kwaito and soul are all beefed up for the clubs (and alert listeners) in what is a bumping brew indeed.

The singer went "pro" back in 1996 when he and DJ Christos (Boom Shaka, DJs At Work) collaborated on Daddy and crew's Crucial Zone kwaito project. But things didn't work out for the now soft spoken 47-year old, and the group split.

However, he persisted (he feels one of the major themes on the album is to "not stop dreaming; to believe in yourself") and pretty soon he'd hooked up with Christos again and contributed to his DJs At Work project with Vinny Da Vinci. Then he recorded the anthemic "Umdali" (which appears in its original version on this record) and raised stakes and warning flags all around.
Daddy also worked on songs such as (RATANANG AND REA ITSUKUNYA) together with DJ CHRISTOS as the main vocalist on both songs.

Like we said, this is just one of the highlights on a sterling CD, on which Daddy's rich and sensual vocals play over church grooves engineered by some of the most monumental names in South African House music scene. Daddy has enlisted the skills of previous partner Christos, as well as experienced compatriots like House Afrika's Tim White and the ever-versatile Static Plastic, to steer his songs onto dancefloors and daytime radio.

Daddy has just released a single now available on Traxsource and other digital platforms entitled SIZALELWE.

Daddy isn't all about fronting, bling bling and fleeting success – after all, he has 4 children to look after! He looks up to the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Caiphus Semenya and M'Du Masilela – "not just for the way they conduct their business, but for the way they live their lives," he says. If anything, the message of the album, he says, is to, "take care of yourself - and everything is possible if you believe and work hard."
