A new artistic pairing to grace the Balance Music catalogue, NILU & Philipp Straub now join forces to create 'The Gate' EP.
A common sight across the clubs of his Denmark home, NILU has been a key component of the likes of Culture Box and Werkstatt while also performing on the international stage in Berlin, Tokyo, Ibiza and Tel Aviv. A 5 year production career that began with a twin track EP on Sezer Uysal's Dark Pleasure Records has subsequently seen a raft of original music on the likes of Einmusika, Bar 25 and Bunny Tiger Dubs, the latter seeing the 'We Both Know' EP released in July 2023.
A legendary figure in the world of underground dance music, Philipp Straub has been at the upper echelons of an ever changing industry for three decades. A regular performer across his Austrian homeland and beyond as an internationally touring DJ, Philipp's ability to captivate audiences with a distinctive and innovative blend of music has seen him much in demand across central Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Simultaneously, a production career has seen him feature heavily on a host of blue chip imprints that include, Yoshitoshi, Variety Music and a quarter century of credits for John Digweed's Bedrock Records. Moreover, the latter accounts for a series of high profile releases that include the 'Separated Togetherness', 'Theia' and 'Lyra' EPs between 2019 and 2021.
2021 saw January's 'Bwell' and October's 'Aeternum' grace Balance Music as the Austrian now combines with NILU on the 3 track, 'The Gate'. The title track is built upon a powerful bass groove and fizzing percussive hi hats. Anchored by a dominant kick that is filtered with seething dancefloors in mind, a chorus of acetylene edged synth leads and shimmering arpeggios combine to create a rich harmonic collage. Building easily as the track progresses, full melodic sequences emerge in post breakdown with reverse effected motifs and a dark rhythmic energy.
'No Limit' is propelled forward via a huge, chest thumping kick and dramatic stereo panned effects, while light percussive claves create a subtle sonic tension of their own. Combined with a fast paced arpeggiated sequence, NILU & Straubb have created a 7 minute tech infused offering that offers a glimpse of melodic light at the stripped back mid point before dropping back into the deep hypnotic groove of earlier movements in the second half.
A light percussive touch heralds the 'Arrival' of the final track on the EP, before a mesmerising arpeggio swims gently across the left/right spectrum, juxtaposed against a strong beat and crunchy sub bass pattern. Driving throughout the near 7 minute piece, the central arpeggio provides a dynamic energy while other melodic characters rise and fall away to create a sonic tension that is at the heart of a relentless tech house infused monster.
